Overview

History & Legends About Kedarnath

Kedarnath Temple is deeply associated with Lord Shiva, who is also known as Kedar — the protector and the destroyer. Lord Shiva represents the full spectrum of human emotions and cosmic forces, including love, anger, fear, death, and mysticism, all expressed through his many divine forms.
The Legend of the Pandavas
According to Hindu mythology, after the great battle of the Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers sought Lord Shiva’s blessings to absolve themselves of the sin of killing their cousins, the Kauravas. However, Lord Shiva did not wish to grant them darshan and fled from Kashi to Guptkashi, where he lived in disguise.

Eventually, the Pandavas discovered his whereabouts. To avoid them, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and tried to disappear into the ground at Kedarnath. As he was diving into the earth, the Pandavas recognized him. It is believed that the hump of the bull remained visible above the surface. The natural rock formation worshipped at Kedarnath resembles this hump.

Impressed by the Pandavas’ devotion and determination, Lord Shiva forgave them of their sins, granted them darshan, and allowed them to worship him at this sacred site.

The Panch Kedar

The other parts of Lord Shiva’s body are believed to have appeared at different locations in the Garhwal Himalayas:

  • The navel at Madmaheshwar Temple

  • The arms at Tungnath Temple

  • The face at Rudranath Temple

  • The matted hair (jata) at Kalpeshwar Temple

Together with Kedarnath, these four temples form the sacred Panch Kedar, a group of five revered shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Garhwal Himalayas.

The legends surrounding Kedarnath not only enrich its spiritual significance but also make it one of the most powerful and revered pilgrimage destinations in India.
