Gaumukh Glacier
Gaumukh Glacier is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the present source of the Bhagirathi River. It is a sacred place for pilgrims who often take a holy dip in its icy waters despite the extreme cold.
Located about 18 km from Gangotri, the journey to Gaumukh is done on foot or by ponies. The trek is relatively moderate, and many travelers complete the trek and return to Gangotri the same day.
Ponies and porters are available in Gangotri for trekking assistance. A Tourist Bungalow at Bhojbasa, located 14 km from Gangotri, offers basic lodging and facilities for trekkers.
From Gaumukh, pilgrims and trekkers often continue their journey to Nandanvan (6 km) and Kedartal (18 km).
Submerged Shivling
This natural rock Shivling remains submerged in the river near Gangotri. According to mythology, Lord Shiva sat here while receiving the sacred Ganga River in his matted locks.
The Shivling becomes visible during winter months when the river’s water level decreases.
Nandanvan Tapovan
Nandanvan and Tapovan are beautiful high-altitude meadows located opposite the Gangotri Glacier, about 6 km from Gaumukh.
These locations provide breathtaking views of the majestic Shivling Peak, making them popular among trekkers and nature lovers.
Kedartal
Kedartal is a spectacular high-altitude lake situated about 18 km from Gangotri. The trek to Kedartal follows a rugged and challenging mountain trail, suitable mainly for experienced trekkers.
There are no facilities along the route, so trekkers must make all necessary arrangements in advance.
Kedar Ganga Sangam
Located about 100 yards from the Gangotri Temple, the Kedar Ganga River flows from the Kedar Valley and merges with the Bhagirathi River on its left bank.
This confluence is considered spiritually significant.
Bhaironghati
Bhaironghati lies about 10 km from Gangotri on the road to Uttarkashi. It is located near the confluence of the Jadh Ganga and Bhagirathi River.
The area is surrounded by dense forests and is home to the sacred Bhairav Nath Temple, which attracts many devotees.
Harsil
Harsil is a beautiful Himalayan village located 26 km from Gangotri at an altitude of about 2,620 meters above sea level. It is famous for its stunning natural beauty and delicious apples.
Harsil lies 72 km from Uttarkashi on the main road to Gangotri.
Adventure lovers can trek to Sat Tal, located about 2 km beyond Harsil, where seven scenic lakes are surrounded by lush natural landscapes.
The Harsil–Jangla Chatti route is especially beautiful and passes through dense deodar forests.
Bhairon Mandir
To reach Bhairon Mandir, travelers must cross the Jahnavi River on foot after traveling from Lanka to Bhaironghati by road.
From there, a short uphill walk leads to the temple.
Gangnani
